Strike up the band with the Center Roughriders!

At 220 members strong, the band represents about one-third of Center High's student population

The fact that nearly one-third of the student body of Center High School is involved in the school's band program says a lot about the strength of the program led by Chris Smith.

This fall the Roughrider Band program is about 220 musicians strong. Smith said he often gets asked how the program has grown to be so successful.

We'll get people who come and spend a day with us just watching what we do and what our routine is,” he said. “They'll asked 'how do you get so many kids out.' It's just one of those unique deals.”

When Smith took over the baton as the CHS band director he said the program had about 100 students.

They say if you have about 10 percent (of the student population) in your band, you're doing good,” he said. “It has just kept steadily growing” with some year-to-year variation.
