Neighboring school districts lend support to Center after tragic death of student

The San Augustine High School Student Council sent their support to Center ISD this morning following the loss of a student. The group sent a poster and card to the senior class and wore yellow in solidarity.

“On behalf of the Center High School students and staff,” Principal Matthew Gregory said, “I would like to express our sincere appreciation for the support shown by so many in this difficult time as we mourn the loss of one of our students.”

Chireno Independent School District sent flowers which are on display in the front office and students at Garrison High School pinned yellow ribbons on each guest entering the volleyball game Tuesday night.

“I am really amazed to see other people appreciate Emily even though they didn’t know her,” senior Miriam Almaguer said. “Seeing other people care about her makes the environment feel better. Having support everywhere makes you feel like you’re not alone.”

A funeral service for Emily Hernandez-Garcia, 17, of Center, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018, in Center will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 8, at St. Therese Catholic Church in Center. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

She died on Sunday night, Sept. 2, from injuries sustained in a car wreck.

She was a senior at Center High School, where she was "an excellent student and even more amazing friend. Emily loved playing soccer and her favorite color was yellow. Her lovely smile will be dearly missed by her family and friends forever," family said.

For the duration of the football season, all seniors on the Roughriders varsity football team will wear helmet decals with the initials E.H. in honor of Emily Hernandez.

The senior class encouraged the public to wear yellow, Emily's favorite color, on Friday, Sept. 7, and to the game against Jefferson that evening.
