Center edged out by Tatum in high scoring season opener, 63-62

TATUM — With 125 points on the scoreboard and the Center Roughriders hitting pay dirt nine times in a hard fought battle against the Tatum Eagles on Friday, the Riders came up 1-point short.

When the final buzzer blew the score was 63-62 with Tatum downing Center in the opening non-district game of the 2020 season for both teams.

The Roughriders rolled up 455 total yards offense with 221 yards coming on the passing arm of quarterback Jake Hanson, #11. KeAmodre Horace had a stellar night in the Riders rushing game with 217 yards on 11 carries.

Horace took the ball across the goal line five times racking up 30 points in Center's scoring effort. He is credited with TD runs of 17 yards; 64 yards; 54 yards; 17 yards; and 67 yards.

As well as the Riders looked on the stats, they did not quite match up to the Eagles. Tatum had 549 total yards with 283 yards  in their passing game and 266 yards rushing.

On defense, the Roughriders had some impressive numbers too.

Senior linebacker Jake Liker, #17, was credited with five solo tackles and seven assists for a total of 12 tackles. Sophomore Timothy Davis, # 24, was in on 13 tackles with 11 assists and two solos.

The Center defensive effort was shored up by Adam Hagler, #14 senior, and Jordan Patton, #50 senior, each credited with 11 tackles. Patton had two solos and nine assists; while Hagler had a solo and 10 assisted tackles.

Senior Colton Crawford, #57, was in on 10 tackles with two solos and eight assists. Crawford and Jamarcus McCollister, #51, each had a sack against the Eagles offense.

Rounding out the Roughriders offensive effort were junior Makel Johnson with six receptions from Hanson for 132 yards and an average of 22 yards per catch.

Jamal Moore, #16 and a senior, had three receptions for 36 yards; while Jason Calloway, #10 and junior, had two receptions for 46 yards for Center.

Christopher Evans, #5 sophomore, had one catch for 7 yards.

Horace got Center on the scoreboard on the Roughriders' opening possession as the team took the ball 77 yards in eight plays with Horace taking the ball in from the second play from scrimmage with 11:43 still to go in the first quarter. That play was set up by a kickoff return by Marques Hall, #7, senior running back who got the Riders fired up as he darted about 70 yards downfield to set up the Riders first score of the night.

The Roughriders are scheduled to be on the road again this Friday night when they take on the Jefferson Bulldogs. Jefferson defeated Pittsburg 28-22, this past Friday.
