With change in DSHS criteria, Shelby County COVID-19 recoveries jump from 146 to 211
Changes in Texas Department of State Health Services reporting criteria has resulted in a big increase in the number of Shelby County COVID-19 victims who are classified as being recovered.
That number increased by more than 40 percent with the DSHS change in one day, according to Kerri Shofner, emergency management coordinator for the county. The 146 Shelby County residents tagged as “recovered” on Wednesday, grew to 211 on Thursday, July 2, she said.
“DSHS has informed us they are now using an algorithm to determine recoveries,” Shofner said Thursday morning.
Likewise, the number of active Shelby County cases flip-flopped from the 119 “active” cases DSHS reported on Wednesday, to only 54 reported a day later, on Thursday, July 2.
Shelby County's reported number of cumulative COVID-19/coronavirus cases held steady at 275 Thursday as DSHS releases more details on local victim recoveries, she said.
“After many requests for updated information from DSHS pertaining to recoveries of COVID-19 in Shelby County, they provided a current list which included 65 never reported recoveries,” she said Thursday.
“The majority of these 65 were reported to us as new cases in April, May and two were reported as new cases in March,” Shofner said.
“The 18 previous 'lost to follow' cases are now on the recovered list,” she said.
Another new record was set Wednesday statewide for the number of new confirmed cases reported. DSHS reported 8,076 new cases and 57 fatalities. The number of additional fatalities represented the second highest number reported in Texas. The state reported 58 COVID-19 fatalities on May 14.
DSHS late Wednesday afternoon reported 168,062 cumulative cases statewide with 2,481 fatalities. State officials reported an estimated 87,556 victim recoveries and 78,025 active cases.
