Center High School Teacher Nicholas Wheeler named VFW Post 8904 Teacher of the Year

He teaches business related courses at Center High School

Center High School teacher Nicholas Wheeler on Thursday was presented a framed certificate designating him as VFW Post 8904 Teacher of the Year.

Presenting the award were VFW Post Commander Gene Hutto and Larry Hume, post quartermaster. Wheeler was surrounded by students and fellow Center High School staffers for the presentation Thursday morning.

He is a business and accounting teacher who transitioned from being an insurance agent about six years ago into teaching. Wheeler earned as associate's degree from Panola College and went on to Stephen F. Austin State University where he graduated with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

“It's a National Citizenship Teacher of the Year Award,” Hume said as Hutto made the presentation.

Wheeler said he teaches accounting, business management, accounting II, principles of business and marketing and finance.

“I'm honored and feel like I don't deserve it,” he said of the honor. Those VFW members who presented the award disagreed. Part of his nomination packet for the award indicated he is passionate about teaching.

“Nicholas is enthusiastic, compassionate and a problem solver at heart,” the nomination said. He is married and the couple have three children.

“When not collaborating and training in the classroom, Nicholas likes spending time with family, teaching a youth group at his church, creating household projects and drinking coffee,” it read.
