Go Texan Spring Fling is set for Saturday. May 4
A long-standing tradition of Shelby County residents investing in the next generation continues Saturday, May 4, when the 9th Annual Go Texan Spring Fling kicks off at 5:30 p.m.
Go Texan volunteer Ed Johnson, Shelby Savings Bank Senior Vice President and Chief Loan Officer, said the event is a fundraiser to help provide scholarship funds to graduates of Shelby County's high schools.
“Since 2012 we've provided 250-$1,000 scholarships to 250 kids from Shelby County,” he said. This year the organization has had 38 scholarships applied for.
Johnson said in addition to the local scholarships awarded, one Shelby County student will be awarded a $20,000 college scholarship on May 29 at the Go Texans Houston Livestock Show Banquet.
Last year there were 49 local scholarships awarded in the amount of $1,000 each, he said.
This is something Shelby County really gets behind and supports,” Johnson said. Admission is $25 a person and includes a fajita with margaritas served.
The 100-gun raffle is always popular and helps provide a major boost to the scholarship funds awarded, he said.
For $650 sponsor tables are available providing seating for eight with free raffle tickets and gun raffle tickets included in the table sponsorships. Also included is a chance to win a special sponsor gun.
Ticket are available from any Go Texan committee member, he said.
“We have some great live auction items this year with 100 percent new items in the live auction,” Johnson said. Those include a boat, custom deer stands, barbecue pits and more.
“Last year we had about 300 to 350 people attend,” he said. “All of the proceeds stay in Shelby County with kids from all of our public schools benefiting.”
Johnson encourages the public to turn out and support the cause.
“We also want to thank all of our sponsors and donors for making this possible,” he said.
