SATURDAY UPDATE: Confirmed Texas cases rise by 967; Shelby County numbers unchanged from Friday

COVID-19 deaths at Carthage nursing facility now at 6

The Texas Department of State Health Services on Saturday reported Shelby County has had 86 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

That figure differed by one from the 87, reported by the Shelby County Emergency Management Office on Friday.

Six people associated with Carthage's Briarcliff Skilled Nursing Center have died due to COVID-1/coronavirus, according to a statement from the facility. That total includes five residents and one employee.

As of Friday 74 residents and 71 employees had been tested for COVID-19. Of that 145 tested, 15 tests have come back negative while 32 tests were classified as active with COVID-19. The facility has 89 of those tests given with results still pending as of Friday.

Countywide, Panola County officials reported 13 new COVID-19 with 10 reported Friday and another three on Saturday morning, according to Panola County Judge LeeAnn Jones. At about 11 a.m. Saturday she reported there have been six deaths due to COVID-16 in Panola County with seven recoveries.

In the Henderson area of Rusk County, one of the state's military testing teams, like those which were set up in Center and Carthage on Friday, was in operation Saturday.

In Nacogdoches County the emergency management office on Saturday morning said DSHS reported nine new confirmed cases, increasing the county's total to 122 confirmed cases. That is higher than the state was reporting about noon Saturday when it had recorded 115 confirmed cases.

“The state provided additional information: of these new cases, five are from two households and one from a previously reported household,” a statement from the EMO said. “It is important to remember that COVID-19 is an opportunistic virus and to continue practicing social distancing efforts in order to slow the spread.”

Statewide in Texas, there were 967 new confirmed COVID-19 cases reported in the DSHS report on Saturday compared to Friday. The state reported 23,773 cases with 623 deaths.

In Friday's statewide tally there had been 22,806 confirmed cases and 593 deaths. State health officials reported 9,986 COVID-19 victims have recovered.

On Friday, Gregg County officials said there had been three confirmed cases of COVID-19/coronavirus, increasing the total 63. On Saturday, the statewide report still showed 58 confirmed cases in Gregg County.

Harrison County reported eight new positive COVID-19 cases, on Friday, nudging the county's total to 71 confirmed cases. Local Harrison County officials were reporting seven fatalities linked to COVID-19.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in DeSoto Parish, La., stood at 184 with 10 deaths as of noon Saturday, according to the Louisiana Department of Health.

In the Shreveport area the number of deaths have now topped 100 with 92 in Caddo Parish and another 12 in Bossier Parish.

In Caddo Parish the number of confirmed cases rose to 1,432. In Bossier Parish there were 265 confirmed cases and 12 deaths reported by the state as of Saturday.

Orleans Parish and Jefferson Parish in the New Orleans area continued to lead Louisiana in COVID-19 cases and deaths. Orleans Parish tallied 6,297 confirmed cases as of Saturday and 399 deaths.

Jefferson Parish had 6,002 confirmed cases and 325 deaths, state official reported.
