Logansport home for quarterfinal game vs. Varnado 7 p.m. Friday
A sense of deja vu hangs over Friday's Louisiana 1A football quarterfinal matchup between the Logansport Tigers and Varnado Wildcats as this is a rematch of last year's quarterfinal contest.
The question is will the score mimic last year's 50-14 Tigers' win?
The game kicks off at 7 p.m. at Logansport High School.
Kevin Magee, head coach of the defending state champion and undefeated Tigers (12-0), says the Wildcats (9-3) lost only one starter from last year's team and that there three losses came against very strong opponents. The Tigers are also riding a 26-game win streak.
“Records don't mean anything,” he said. “These guys can play. They are the same team from last year, only older, more mature, stronger and faster.”
Magee said the Wildcats run a double Wing-T formation and some spread for their passing game. As such, he said practice will focus on basics.
“It will be a really fundamental week,” Magee said. “You have to keep you assignment. If you guess, they'll take it the distance.”
Logansport will move to a 5-2 defense in order to have better penetration into the backfield. Magee said that while his defense is normally a gap-control system, agasint the wing, it will be critical for his down lineman to create havoc in the Wildcats' backfield.
The game will feature the most healthy players the Tigers have had for any game this season.
“It's as healthy as we've been all year,” Magee said. “We had 18 player sit out a game or two this year. That like two for every game we played. It was bruises, sprains and toher injuries.”
Magee said the team is in a good frame of mind.
“ There very confident,” Magee said. “Two years ago, it was an unknown for them to practice over Thanksgiving break. This year, they've played a lot of playoffs games and a lot of football. There not the deer-inheadlights feeling. Their calmness helps me sometimes. ITHey've won 26 in a row and have a little swagger.”
The Tigers had no trouble dispatching Homer on the road Nov. 17, wining 48-0.
Tremin Brown opened the scoring with a 47-yard run. Dalton Shaw then hit Austin Edgar for a 15-yard score to make it 14-0.
In the second quarter, Logansport added two more scores, as quarterback Dalton Shaw his Trevion Daugherty for 17 yards and Patrick Mims from 12-yards out. The score was 28-0 at the half.
The second half was played under a running clock. DeMicko Gray had a pick-six interception returnto make it 34-0 after three.
Shaw hit John Stephens for a 20 yard score in the fourth and Dayton West added a 20-yard touchdown run to make it 48-0.
