1918 CENTER WAR FUND DRIVE PARADE -- A parade was held at Center in May 1918 to promote a World War I Fund Drive. The parade was led by two horsemen followed by floats. The girl on the white horse was Miss Mae Kethley representing Jeanne D’ Arc. Standing by her was Mrs. Homer F. Band. Others in the picture are identified as Happy Rogers, Uncle Sam (in the front seat of the car at the left); Mary Lizzie Elliott, France; Elizabeth Rogers, Belgium; Lottie Hall, Cuba (standing in front of the car at the left); Mary Kathryn Price, Brazil; Kathryn Davis, Red Cross Nurse (in back seat of car at left) ; Mary Lee Rogers (PortugaI) ; Marie Rogers, Servia; Julia Kennedy, Italy (standing in front of car); and N.O. Thomas Jr., U.S. Soldier holding flag. Also, John Sims Stubbs, U.S. Navy; Edward Rogers, England (lad in front wearing straw hat); Mary Rogers, China; Ruby Sanders, Japan; Miss Hazel Bennett was Columbia. In the middle float, Tottie Mangum was the flag-bearer; Mrs. Smith Sanders, was holding a stretcher carrying a wounded soldier, little Leo King. One of the cars was driven by Weathered Short and at his side was Mrs. James G. Rogers in the uniform of a nurse and on the cot lay a wounded soldier, Fred Hughes. The two nurses were Mrs. Julia Shook and Mrs. Warren. In the float at the back were members of the Junior Red Cross, Francis Kennedy, Lacey Smith (as Justice), Madge Kennedy as Mercy, Gertrude McKnight as Hope and Virgie Duke as Love.
