Most families have their own traditions, something to bond them together to create lifelong memories. For the Scates family, the tradition is drag racing.

Michael Scates of Center has passed his love of racing cars to his son Dale and daughter, Kaleigh. 

Four of the five high schools in Shelby County kicked off 7-on-7 football action Monday evening at Shelbyville High School. Center, Joaquin, Shelbyville and Timpson high schools are all represented in the summer games. The four Shelby County schools are joined by San Augustine and Hemphill. Shelbyville first year Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Jason Ferguson said the competition helps sharpen his team’s defensive game.

About 50 participants took part in the 22nd annual Preston Football Camp Saturday at Roughrider Stadium where they worked on football skills and went through specific drills. Those in attendance learned some of those skills from players at the college and professional levels.

Brian Gandy of Joaquin High School has accepted a job at Hunting High School where he’ll serve as offensive coordinator, head track coach and head powerlifting coach for the Red Devils.

It was the sixth round of the 2005 NFL Draft when Mike Montgomery’s phone rang. It was Ted Thompson, General Manager of the Green Bay Packers on the other end, telling Montgomery the Packers want to make him part of one of the most storied franchises in sports.

The Joaquin Lady Rams softball team saw its season come to an end in the third game of a best-of-three game series Saturday after getting knocked out of the playoffs in the Regional Semi-finals by Grapeland at Cushing High School.

Joaquin’s softball team’s four seniors know a thing or two about adversity. They’ve been through it all together. They’ve experienced the tough times but they’re well aware that hard work brings perseverance. In fact, they’re seeing that first hand as they prepare for the Grapeland Sandies in the Regional Semifinals.

The Joaquin Lady Rams and Alto Lady Jackets went back and forth in a three-game series with the Alto Lady Jackets in the Regional Quarterfinals this weekend. The Lady Rams ultimately came out winning in dramatic fashion.

Like many other high school students around the state of Texas and handful of others in Shelby County, Timpson’s Jakelia Caraway is Austin-bound as she’ll represent the Lady Bears in the 100-meter dash.

Caraway is no stranger to the state track meet as she has been there twice before.

Some old habits are hard to break. Just ask the new girls basketball coach at Tenaha High School, Garry Davison. He has been seen wearing shoes that weren’t exactly Tenaha colors and he still hasn’t heard the end of it.

 

Friday night saw the Lady Rams finish what they started Thursday night by defeating the Colmesneil Lady Dogs 3-2 in the second of a best-of-three game series.

Center High School will be represented at the state track meet this weekend when four Roughriders travel to Austin in hopes of bringing home the hardware. Seniors Darron Bolton, K.J. Garrett, Shaquille Ingram and sophomore Jack Ford will team up in the 4x200 relay.

DeJalen Preston, a junior at Center High School, was recently selected to participate in the 2013 Las Vegas World Championship Cup Basketball Tournament July 12-15.

Two years ago, Chloe Brown, an eighth grader at Joaquin Jr. High, went with her parents to the state track meet in Austin. Now a sophomore, Brown is going back to Austin, but this time as a contestant instead of a spectator. She’ll run the mile and the 400 meter.

The Shelbyville Dragons baseball team saw its season come to an end Thursday when they lost to the Lovelady Lions 5-3 in the bi-district round of the playoff at Stephen F. Austin’s Jaycees Field in Nacogdoches.

Eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning helped the Lady Rams seal up their victory in the bi-district round of the playoffs when they played host to the Mount Enterprise Lady Cats Monday night.

The Joaquin Rams baseball team played its final game of the season Monday when it played host to Chireno, beating the Owls 16-4 in four and a half innings.

Each of the first two innings saw the Rams score 7 runs to jump to a quick 14-0 lead.

The Shelbyville High School girls track team has experienced some success this year. That might be putting it lightly considering the Lady Dragons have won their last seven track meets.

Stephany Carter, the girls track coach said that’s a first for any team she has ever coached.

Dwight Preston is preparing for his annual football camp. This is his 22nd year to run the camp and he’s excited and says he wants to help kids learn the necessary skills to be a good athlete.

The Center Lady ‘Riders season didn’t end how they would’ve preferred Friday night when the Jasper Lady Bulldogs spoiled it by beating them 15-4. The Lady ‘Riders finish the season with a district record of 2-9.

The Shelbyville Dragons got one step closer to a playoff appearance Tuesday night when they defeated the Timpson Bears on the road 14-4.
