Graveside services for Joe Evans, 59, of Diboll formerly of Shelby County, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at McClelland Cemetery in Shelbyville and Bud Bonner officiated.
Mr. Evans passed away Friday, June 7 in Diboll. He was born November 5, 1953 in Sioux City, IA. to Woodrow and Verna Evans.
He is preceded in death by parents, Woodrow and Maudine Evans.

Funeral services for Robin Allison Daw, 36, of Nacogdoches, were held at 10 a.m. Monday, June 17, 2013 at Watson & Sons Chapel and Bro. Lance Cyprett officiated. Burial followed at Truitt Cemetery in Joaquin.
Ms. Daw passed away Thursday, June 13 in Nacogdoches. She was born July 4, 1976 in Orange to Johnny Daw and Evon Daw. She was a member of Austin’s Heights Baptist Church in Nacogdoches.
She is preceded in death by infant daughter, Baylee Daw.

Center Firefighters were called to a residential house fire Friday afternoon four and a half miles from Center on FM 138 in Lower Arcadia.
Firefighters were in the middle of a safety meeting when they were dispatched by Center Police Department to the two story structure owned by Milton and Cathy Evans.
Mr. Evans was asleep when the fire detectors sounded. Children who were in the house had to go and wake up Mr. Evans, who attempted to put out the fire himself. However, the smoke got too thick and that was when he called 911.

Highway 84 West in Joaquin and Highway 7 East were the scenes of two wrecks Friday, June 14 as they caused the flow of traffic to slow down.
Jeremy Bryan Baker, 22, of Carthage was driving a 2012 Isuzu box truck westbound on the shoulder of U.S. Highway 84. Baker attempted to make a u-turn and struck Michael Shane Matthews, 38, of Grand Cane, La. in the left front quarter of his 2008 Ford Expedition.

34 indictments were delivered as the Shelby County Grand Jury for the January 2013 term of the 273rd Judicial District Court convened on Tuesday, June 11.
Tyronda Lashet Sharp, possession of a controlled substance by fraud - third degree felony; Jackson Sharp Jr., possession of a controlled substance by fraud - third degree felony; Larry Wayne Cartwright, delivery of a controlled substance - second degree felony; James Dewayne Standley, assault - prior conviction - third degree felony.

A Center, Texas, couple now living in Elgin, Texas, has been indicted and charged with health care fraud violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales today.
Bill Harvill, 59, and his wife, Cathy Harvill, 56, were indicted by a federal grand jury on Mar. 27, 2013, and charged with theft of government money. They were arrested on June 7, 2013, in Elgin, Texas, and appeared before U.S. Magistrate Zachary J. Hawthorn today for an initial appearance.

Aaron Liker of Center along with James Bradford of Shelbyville and Lorenzo Young of Timpson were on the winning end of the third annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes Heart of a Champion Bowl from Rose Stadium in Tyler. The three Shelby County athletes suited up for the Red Team who defeated the Blue Team 40-10.

As the school year draws to a close the first grade students at Joaquin Elementary have all been rehearsing their parts to present their play, “Storybook Land,” for parents and students.
Last week they presented their plays and had a large audience in attendance. It was enjoyed by all who came to see the play.

The Go Texan Restaurant Round-up is quickly approaching and some restaurants in Center are gearing up to participate in the event.
The round-up is a statewide restaurant round-up sponsored by Texas Department of Agriculture and it is only for Go Texan members. Go Texas is a program that any retail entity, not only restaurants,

As of September 1, 2011, Texas motorists began to see a surge in the speed limit after House Bill 1353 was signed into law by Governor Perry.
The new law allowed the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to increase the speed to 75 miles per hour on a case by case basis. Following a traffic and engineering study, each new 75 mph speed limit increase is to be approved by the Texas Transportation Commission.

Food for Thought in Timpson, a partner of the East Texas Food Bank of Tyler will host its first Mobile Food Pantry pickup and Senior Grocery pickup Friday, June 21 from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. The pickup location will be at the Woodland Christian Church located at 272 Highway 59 South in Timpson.
These two events will be held simultaneously, each month on the third Friday of the month, so go ahead and mark July 19 for the next delivery.

The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Ambassadors hosted a ribbon cutting and open house on Friday June 14, for Austin Finance at their new location. Austin Finance is now located at 1129 Hurst Street in the Wulf Center.

The Center City Council held a public hearing of petition and arguments for and against annexation of property on County Road 1000 and County Road 1431 and classification of area of zoning on C-2 and planned development.

Funeral services for Victor Albert Lacy, 84, formerly of Center were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013, at Faith Baptist Church in Duncanville. Burial followed at Shiloh Cemetery in Mt. Enterprise.
Mr. Lacy passed away Thursday, June 6 in Duncanville. He was born July 7, 1929 in Henderson to Clarence and Letha Lacy. He served in the U.S. Army and was a longtime employee of Texaco-Chevron where he retired in 1985 after 35 years of service.
He is preceded in death by sisters, Marie Jones and Geneva DeLancet; and brother, Ray Lacy.

The FBI and local police in Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas are seeking a serial armed bank robber dubbed the “Loan Ranger Bandit.”

The Timpson Chamber of Commerce has announced that Timpson Frontier Days will be held on July 4 - July 6 on the Timpson square. To announce the arrival of the event, the Pony Express, members of the City of Timpson, Timpson Area Chamber of Commerce members, and Timpson residents delivered the announcement to residents of Center, City of Center representatives and Shelby County Chamber of Commerce members on the Center square on Monday, June 10.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service offices in four East Texas counties will present “Taste of Texas” from 5:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. June 27 at the Windham Civic Center in Center. Registration will start at 5 p.m.
“Taste of Texas” is a unique program in many ways, in that it will include “viewing, tasting and learning events,” said Lane Dunn, AgriLife Extension agent in Shelby County.
One highlight will be a virtual feedlot and packing plant tour, Dunn said.

Sign up today to be a part of the Center What-A-Melon Crawl 5K/1 mile run and walk. The What-A-Melon Crawl will be held on the final day of the What-A-Melon festival and will benefit the Amateur Center Softball Association.
The race will begin at 7 a.m. Saturday, July 13 starting and ending on the Historic Shelby County Square. The run will take you down several of the beautiful streets and around the downtown square in Center.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) officers were busy on Monday as they responded to not one, but two rollover wrecks.
DPS State Troopers responded to the scene of one rollover wreck on Monday morning at 11:48 a.m. on U.S. Highway 84 outside of Tenaha.
